Comprehensive Sexuality Education CSE

It is every parents dream for their children to delay sexual relations and teenage pregnancies at an early age. However, little or no effort is put in place to provide appropriate information on what this “uncomfortable topic” is all about.

When was the first time you knew what sex was all about? Please share with us using the Comment Section. Chantal (not her real name) says she asked her mom what the term Virgin meant, she has always been reading and hearing stories about losing virginity in a magazine and from peers. Her mother answered “it means someone that does not know boys”, That was all my mum said. At that point she felt so bad and guilty because she knew so many boys; in school and neighborhood. If only she told me the full meaning of a virgin, maybe just maybe I would have told her out of ignorance that I am not a virgin, because my cousin was raping me.

There is so much information to digest as a teenager and changes that the mind has not fully accepted. It is a confusing point of life that sometimes is manifested through anger, social distancing, and fear. Studies have shown that adolescents who get a comprehensive sexuality education make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health as well as protect their wellbeing and dignity.

What is CSE?

Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) emphasizes a holistic approach to human development and sexuality. UNESCO identifies the primary goal of sexuality education as that “children and young people become equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to make responsible choices about their sexual and social relationships in a world affected by HIV (UNESCO. 2009. International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education).
