About Leap Girl Africa

Our History

Leap Girl Africa was founded in 2016 by Pertulla Ezigha Ketcha, as a survivor support group at the University of Yaoundé II Soa. Pertulla, a survivor of rape, was deeply moved by the growing number of female students dropping out due to sexual harassment, abuse, and exploitation, which was exacerbated by socio-economic hardship and conflict. Hearing stories of sexual harassment twice a week, she took action, creating a safe space for survivors on campus. The group began with 10 students, raising awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and survivor sex for education. Through persistent efforts and social media outreach, it grew to 65 survivors in its first year.

In 2018, responding to the urgent need for more young women-led organizations addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Leap Girl Africa became legally recognized. This step allowed the organization to expand its work, tackling gender discrimination, and unequal access to education, and empowering adolescent girls and young women through social and economic programs.

Today, Leap Girl Africa is a vital space for girls and women from all backgrounds to envision a brighter future. Through education, empowerment, and skill development, the organization helps women and girls realize their potential, ensuring they are equipped for the opportunities that lie ahead.
